MFFC wins Men's Premier 5-4 on Golden Goal in Charleston 6v6 Shootout |
|
The 3rd Annual Charleston 6v6 Shootout held this past Saturday-Sunday, July 25-26 at North Charleston High School Stadium finished in grand fashion with the Men's Premier (money division) going into Golden Goal overtime to determine the winner. It was a classic battle between a predominantly American team (MFFC) made up of collegiate players and local amateurs against a predominantly Latino team (APASEO) made up of Mexican, South Amercian and and American players. Apaseo competes locally in various adult leagues and is consistently in championship matches. MFFC is currently sitting on top of the CSL 6v6 summer league Premier division.
MFFC went out on top 3-0 and Apaseo looked tired. Apaseo began battling back, as they have so many times, and about midway through the 2nd half, tied the score 3-3. The level of play was exceptional and with a little over 1 minute remaining, Ian O'Shea put Apaseo ahead 4-3, but the celebration would not last more than 30 seconds as MFFC responded with a blast from Drew Fuzy to put the game into overtime. The Golden Goal (sudden victory) OT period did not last more than 1 minute as Ben Wright found the back of the net on a counter attack giving MMFC a 5-4 victory. Then the real celebration began. Congratulations to both teams for a showcase match!
The Men's 1st division was won by Juventus which beat Madra Rua 5-2 avenging a 6-4 loss the day before. Nino Benitez was the MVP. In the Men's 2nd division, the B 52's (a coed team from Columbia) handed the SCFC Plague Rats a 7-3 loss making their ride home that much sweeter. Collin Kent was the MVP in the 2nd division final.
We want to thank our corporate sponsor McDonald's for their support again this year as well as the other sponsors: Madra Rua Irish Pub and Lloyds Soccer. A portion of the proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Kris Baczmaga Memorial Fund.

Women's USA vs Canada match provides unique opportunity for local players |
|
The U.S. Women’s National Team will play Canada twice in July, facing its familiar foe on Sunday, July 19, at Rochester Rhinos Stadium in Rochester, N.Y., and then again three days later on Wednesday, July 22, at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C. The local McDonald's Co-op group is a sponsor for the women's international friendly match in Charleston and has asked Lowcountry Soccer to assist them with finding a group of young soccer players to be escorts for the national team players of the two countries.
The matches mark the first meetings between the teams since Natasha Kai scored an overtime game-winner in a 2-1 quarterfinal victory for the U.S. at the 2008 Olympics in Shanghai, China, on Aug. 15, 2008. Coming off the gold medal triumph at the 2008 Olympics, second-year head coach Pia Sundhage will use these matches to help evaluate the top U.S. players, all of whom are currently playing in Women's Professional Soccer, as she continues to mold a team for qualifying for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany.
For some lucky young soccer players ages 7-9, the game represents a special moment in their lives. As is the tradition in most international matches, there will be 22 young boys and girls escorting the starting players from the two national teams onto the field for the national anthems. In addition to the children of families that work for McDonald's there will be 14 players representing (9) different soccer clubs that participate in the Lower State Youth Soccer Association leagues.
They are: Lucy Bailey (Charleston United SC), Elizabeth Jaskwhich (Daniel Island SA), Gavin Campbell (Goose Creek United), Reeves Rhodes (Hampton-Varnville United), Emma Sherman/Avery Alea (James Island YSA), Natalie Aversano/Gwen Conway/Jonny Bott (Mt. Pleasant SC), Kearney Suder/Jenna Waddle (North Area SA), Hector Carmona/Ann Carolina Shields (Summerville SC), Colin Thomas (Walterboro SC).

Apaseo wins 2009 Copa Charleston |
|
(1-30-09) After losing to Real Miraflores in last year's Copa Charleston final, Apaseo was not about to relive the same outcome. Instead they won the 2009 Copa Charleston tournament with a convincing 9-5 win over FC Brazil. Ironically, they did it without the firepower of Ian O'Shea who had up until the championship tallied 23 goals in the tournament. Eusebio "Chivo" Perez took on that responsibility by scoring 4 goals to lead Apaseo. The Brazilians were not able to play at their usual level due to several injuries to key players like Vladimir Silviero and Wesley Silva and their goalkeeper who had been out since their morning quarterfinal match. Ian O'Shea did however win a personal double taking home both the "Golden Boot" and tournament "MVP" awards.
Lowcountry Soccer would like to thank the following businesses and organizations for their tremendous support:
Madra Rua Pub, Lloyd's Soccer, Joye Law Firm, North Charleston Recreation Dept. and North Charleston High School.
